Writing Furniture-Market Commentary: From Evidence to Useful Point of View

A framework for producing timely, transparent and commercially useful industry analysis without confusing fact, inference and opinion.

Good commentary does more than summarise news. It defines a question, assembles relevant evidence, explains uncertainty and offers a reasoned implication for furniture professionals. Its authority comes from transparent judgement—not a false appearance of certainty.

1. Choose a decision-led question

Frame the article around a practical issue such as demand, capacity, price exposure, procurement or product change. Avoid a broad topic that cannot support a clear conclusion.

2. Build an evidence table

Record source, date, definition, period, geography, measure, limitation and relevance. Prefer primary official or direct sources for factual claims.

3. Compare before concluding

Use time series, segments and counterevidence. A single percentage or quotation rarely establishes direction, cause or scale.

4. Separate observation and inference

Use explicit language: the source reports; the data show; we infer; one plausible explanation is; our view is. State alternative explanations where material.

5. Translate into consequence

Explain who is affected, over what horizon, which assumption matters and what action is proportionate. Commentary should improve a decision rather than merely sound informed.

6. Date, review and correct

Include evidence cut-off, author or owner, sources and review trigger. Correct material errors transparently and update time-sensitive conclusions instead of leaving them to appear current.

Questions to carry forward

  • Which decision question does the commentary answer?
  • Are facts, calculations, inferences and opinions labelled?
  • What counterevidence or alternative explanation exists?
  • Who is affected and over what horizon?
  • When must the conclusion be reviewed?
