A practical framework for reading South African production conditions without confusing installed equipment, available capacity and proven capability.
Local manufacturing conditions are shaped by demand, materials, components, skills, utilities, finance, equipment, logistics and the project pipeline. A capable factory can still face a constrained window; spare equipment does not automatically mean the required product can be delivered repeatedly.
1. Read official manufacturing indicators
Use Stats SA manufacturing production and sales as broad economic context. Check classifications and release notes; aggregated manufacturing movement is not a direct capacity measure for one furniture category.
2. Map the production system
Follow information, materials and operations through cutting, machining, forming, welding, finishing, upholstery, assembly, inspection and dispatch. Identify outsourced and constrained stages.
3. Test current capacity
Separate theoretical output, practical shift capacity, present loading and capacity reserved for the project. Include changeovers, maintenance, utilities, labour and competing orders.
4. Identify input exposure

5. Assess skills and improvement capability
Identify critical operators, supervisors, technical staff and quality ownership. Look for training, cross-skilling, maintenance and evidence that defects lead to corrective action.
6. Connect competitiveness to service
Evaluate speed of development, configuration, logistics, installation, parts and repair alongside unit price. Local value often appears in responsiveness and recovery as well as conversion activity.
