Import, Currency and Supply-Chain Exposure in Furniture
A practical guide to mapping imported inputs, exchange-rate assumptions, logistics boundaries, lead-time risk and local recovery options.
A locally assembled product may contain imported mechanisms, hardware, textiles or electrical components; an imported finished product may be stocked and serviced locally. Exposure should be mapped at component, commercial and service level rather than reduced to one origin label.
1. Map imported content
Identify finished products, components, materials and specialist processes sourced outside South Africa. Rank them by value, lead time, substitutability and effect on product conformity.
2. Define the exchange-rate basis
Record currency, rate or adjustment formula, quote validity, deposit, hedge or forward-cover assumptions and the event that fixes the price. Separate supplier policy from a formal tender calculation.
3. Understand the logistics chain
Trace origin, consolidation, freight, clearance, inland transport, storage and delivery. Use a named place and current Incoterms® rule where applicable, while defining installation separately.
4. Test lead-time uncertainty
Distinguish supplier production, freight estimate, border or port uncertainty and local final-mile activity. Use ranges and milestone evidence where the chain is not controlled.
5. Plan substitutions before disruption
Pre-assess equivalent components where feasible and define who approves change. A substitute may alter dimensions, warranty, test coverage, finish or user experience.
6. Value local recovery capability
Local stock, parts, technical skill and repair can reduce lifecycle exposure even when inputs are imported. Verify quantities, replenishment and service commitments rather than relying on a local office address.
Questions to carry forward
- Which inputs are imported and specification-critical?
- When and how is the exchange rate fixed?
- Where do transport cost and risk transfer?
- Which alternatives are pre-approved?
- What stock, repair or service exists locally?
